These regulations govern academic credit received through Advance Placement or examination, academic credit transferred to Loyola from another institution, or student placement in courses through exam scores.

Loyola recognizes that students, as a result of study or experience, may possess a mastery of the content of certain college courses. To enable students to profit from their knowledge, Loyola allows students to receive credit or a waiver of a requirement through departmental or external examination.
Freshmen and transfer students entering Loyola who wish to be awarded college credit on the basis of acceptable credit by examination instruments must submit official results from the testing agencies for evaluation of credits within 60 days from the date of registration. International students must submit official results from the testing agencies for evaluation of credits within 90 days from the date of registration. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the credits not being applied to the Loyola degree.
Credit by examination, including any credit accepted for AP, IB, and CLEP examinations, is governed by the following regulations:
Departmental Examinations: Students may get in touch with the associate dean for a subject area and petition to be examined on the content of a specific course or to have an examination or evaluation of an academic experience related to a specific area. Upon completion of the examination or evaluation, the associate dean will notify the Office of Student Records who shall, if the student has been successful, post the credit. There is a per course equivalent fee charged. Students should consult their associated dean for this fee information.
External Examinations: Students may petition the university for credit by external examination by having the scores sent to the student’s dean’s office. The dean’s office will evaluate all scores based on the approved external examination.

The American Council on Education (ACE) recognizes the educational value of military training and experience. ACE continuously evaluates military school courses and occupations and makes recommendations for college level credit. ACE credit recommendations are present on the Joint Services Transcript (JST) of the military service member. Loyola University New Orleans accepts military service records and will award credit for ACE recommendations (where applicable) in the baccalaureate and master’s programs. In order for Loyola University to evaluate ACE recommendations for credits, students must submit their official JST to the dean’s office of their major.
While ACE recommendations that meet criteria will be considered for credit during the evaluation of the JST, they are not binding to the University. Duplicate credit recommendations will not be allowed. In most cases, credits will be awarded as elective credit. At the discretion of the student’s academic department, some elective credits may be allowed to satisfy specific degree requirements by substitution. Any credit awarded may be comprised of direct Loyola University equivalencies, discipline specific electives, or general electives as determined by Loyola University Transfer Credit Evaluators. A maximum of 15 credit hours of specific coursework or general elective credits will be awarded for educational experience in the military. Military courses in which ACE has declared optional credit recommendations will be viewed on a case-by-case basis to determine the appropriate credit.
Loyola may award academic credit for Advanced Level (A Level) exams results on the GCE (General Certificate of Education). The academic credit to be awarded is at the discretion of the Dean's Office in consultation with the academic department.

Loyola must verify incoming student placement in college-level courses. While initial placement is determined by SAT/ACT scores, completion of placement excercises are required for college level English composition. Placement excercises are available for students with program requirements that include languages other than English.
Students only bypass placement excercies if they have officially submitted the appropriate credit by examination scores or transcripts itemizing appropriate transfer credits in the areas of English, mathematics, or languages other than English.
Based on their ACT/SAT scores, students are placed in ENGL A100 (Expository Writing) or ENGL T122 (Critical Reading and Writing). English majors substitute ENGL A205 for ENGL T122. However, no English major is exempt from taking ENGL A205.
Placement by ACT/SAT scores will be verified by means of a diagnostic writing exercise administered during the first week of class in all composition courses. On the basis of the results of this diagnostic exercise, composition faculty can recommend that students registered for ENGL A100 be reassigned to ENGL T122 and vice versa. The Director of Composition will review these recommendations and adjust students’ placements and schedules accordingly. Such changes in placement are considered definitive.

Language requirements are determined by academic program or major. Students with a language requirement or an interest in taking language courses must take the online Language Placement Test if they have 2 years or more of high school language study in French, Spanish, Latin, or ancient Greek. Anyone who places at the 200 level or above for French or Spanish, or at the 250 level or above for Latin and ancient Greek, may not drop back more than 1 semester-level if she or he decides to continue in that language. Any student who did not study French or Spanish, but speaks the language at home, should take the Language Placement Test and then consult with the Chair of the Department of Languages and Cultures about placement.
Students with the two-semester language requirement should complete it within two consecutive semesters.
Placement Tests – Classical Languages: Placement tests in both Latin and ancient Greek to all entering students who have had two or more years in either language. While language requirements are specific to each student’s major, these exams help determine whether students may be exempt from an undergraduate language requirement or determine the appropriate level for them to complete a language requirement. Exemption from the language requirement does not prevent students from pursuing additional language study in Latin, Greek or any other language offered at Loyola.
Placement Tests – Modern Languages: Placement tests in French and Spanish are available to entering students through the Ross Foreign Language Center. While language requirements are specific to each student’s major, these exams help determine whether students may be exempt from an undergraduate language requirement or determine the appropriate level for them to complete a language requirement. Exemption from the language requirement does not prevent students from pursuing additional language study in French, Spanish, or any other language offered at Loyola.

Loyola University New Orleans must verify incoming student placement in college level Math courses. Placement is determined by SAT/ACT scores or AP exams. Students who took AP Calculus or Statistics credit exams can receive credit for Math courses as stated in the AP Credit by Exam Scale.

Optional Placement Tests – History: Based on their scores on the history test, students may receive Loyola credit for specific courses upon registration.
Required Placement Tests – Music: Placement and proficiency tests and auditions are given in the area of music for the purpose of assigning students to private applied music study and to ensure homogeneity in some classes. Extraordinarily able music students may receive advanced placement in some music study on an individual basis

Awarding College Credit for Transfers
For undergraduates enrolled in on-campus programs, official transcripts from other accredited colleges and universities should be sent to the Office of Admissions. For undergraduates enrolled in online programs, official transcripts from all previous institutions should be sent by email to onlinetranscripts@loyno.edu (transcripts for online students may also be mailed). After having been evaluated by admissions, they will be forwarded to each dean's office for review and application of credit toward Loyola degree requirements in the student's chosen major. No more than 64 hours of coursework from an accredited two-year school may be applied to a Loyola degree program.
The dean's office will notify the student of the evaluation of transfer coursework. The transfer GPA will be computed and used for admission purposes only. Transfer credit will be awarded only as earned hours for approved courses in which grades of C or above have been earned. Transfer quarter hours will be converted to semester hours. Regardless of the number of hours accepted in transfer, students are required to meet the residency and degree requirements of their program of study. At least 25 percent of credit hours required for the degree must be completed at Loyola.
Earned hours from another college in remedial, technical, and/or courses not considered to be college level will not be accepted for transfer. Experiential learning programs and correspondence credit taken at an accredited university may be counted only if approved by the dean's office of the college to which the student applies and the student attends.
Transfer students will be informed of the amount of credit which will transfer prior to their enrollment, if possible, but at the latest, prior to the end of the first academic term in which they are enrolled. It is the student's responsibility to report discrepancies or question evaluations. If the student later changes colleges within the university, such work will be evaluated by the dean of the new college.
Awarding Transfer Credit
Freshmen and transfer students entering Loyola with transfer credits from an accredited college located within the United States must submit official transcripts for evaluation of credits within 60 days from the date of registration. Freshmen entering Loyola with transfer credits from an accredited college located outside the United States must submit official transcripts for evaluation of credits within 90 days from the date of registration. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the transfer credits not being applied to the Loyola degree.
Military Service: ACE

Students who have earned academic credit at another accredited college of university may be allowed to transfer a maximum of six credit hours with a minimum grade of "B" and with the approval of the department chair and/or the dean of the college. Each degree program has certain restrictions concerning acceptance of courses completed at other institutions. Transfer of credits earned more than five years prior to enrollment will not ordinarily be considered. Courses that were taken on quarter hours will be converted to semester hours.
In all cases, course work will be evaluated for equivalence to Loyola requirements. Students must provide course descriptions and/or other supporting materials to assist faculty in the evaluation process.
Transfer students will be informed of the amount of credit which will transfer prior to their enrollment, if possible, but at the latest prior to the end of their first academic term in which they are enrolled.
Jesuit MBA Articulation
The College of Business has a consortium agreement with selected AACSB-accredited Jesuit schools. Students may transfer up to 50% of their course requirements of the MBA program, exclusive of the BA 850 capstone course, at the 700- or 800-level under this agreement. A grade of "B" or higher is required in any course taken at another school to apply to degree requirements. Students must also meet the admission requirements of the other school.
Transfer of Doctoral Academic Credit
Students may transfer up to 6 doctoral course credits into a doctoral program with a minimum grade of 'B'.
Graduate Transfers within Loyola
Students who transfer from a Loyola University New Orleans master's degree into a different Loyola master’s degree may be allowed to transfer a maximum of nine credit hours with a minimum grade of "B" and with the approval of the department chair and/or the dean of the college. Transfer of credits earned more than five years prior to enrollment will not ordinarily be considered.
Transfer students will be informed of the amount of credit which will transfer prior to their enrollment, if possible, but at the latest prior to the end of their first academic term in which they are enrolled.
