Double Major Guidelines

Students who choose to double major within the College of Business (pursue two of the available business majors simultaneously) may count the required major courses in their second business major toward any unspecified "business electives" required in their primary business major in order to reduce the overall course load required to double major.

Students can, at times, count a single cross-listed course (e.g. MGT/MKT B335 Advanced Business Communications) toward specified major area electives in two majors simultaneously (e.g. if the student was a MGT/MKT double major, using MGT/MKT B335 to fulfill both a MGT and a MKT elective), but only with the permission of the Associate Dean and only for specified courses.

Students who pursue a double major between a College of Business program and another Loyola program outside of the College of Business should select the business major as their primary major and reside in the College of Business as the department of record. This allows the student more direct access to services restricted to business students such as programs through the Business Portfolio Program office.

Students with double majors are generally assigned an advisor in each area of study to ensure adequate progress through the requirements of both degree programs.

Graduation + Residence Requirements

In order to graduate, a student must meet any degree program or curricular requirements of the university and the college, and must possess a cumulative Loyola grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0, as well as a GPA of at least 2.0 in all business courses taken at Loyola. Students must also complete all of the listed required courses for their chosen major(s) and have a GPA of at least 2.0 in those major courses taken at Loyola.

A student must complete at least half of the business core courses taught in the College of Busines and at least 15 credit hours of the required courses of their chosen major(s) while at Loyola. Internship Program Requirements

Students must complete an internship as part of their business degree. Students must have junior or senior standing to count the internship towards the official requirement. Internships may take place in the summer, fall, or spring semester and require a minimum of 120 hours to be spent over a minimum of 5 weeks at the job site. Students must also complete an academic component as defined and approved by the academic internship supervisor.

Internship grades are assigned on a Pass / Fail basis. The grade is based on the following criteria:

  • Meeting requirements set by the academic supervisor and the site supervisor,
  • Confidential performance evaluation given by the internship site supervisor, and
  • Completion of an academic component as approved by the academic supervisor.

The required internship course (BA B497) is 3 credit hours and counts toward the student's 120 credit hour degree requirement. Students must have a cumulative Loyola GPA of at least 2.0 to enroll in an internship. Credit earned through an internship may not be applied to the university or college's residence requirement. Internships are coordinated through the Business Portfolio Program office and must be approved by the Director of the Business Portfolio Program.

Portfolio Program Requirements

The Business Portfolio Program is a required series of eight, sequential, non-credit courses focusing on students’ career development. Portfolio grades are assigned on a Pass / Fail basis. The grading policy for Portfolio courses outlined below is administered and enforced through the Dean’s office.

  1. To earn a passing grade, a student must complete all course requirements stipulated in the syllabus posted every semester to Black Board. Students who have not completed all assignments as stipulated on the syllabus will receive an F for the semester. No Incompletes (grade of I) are given for Portfolio courses.
  2. No make-ups are allowed. All F grades remain on the student’s transcript. Students should note that while Portfolio grades do not impact the GPA, a F on a transcript may keep a student from being admitted to grad school, law school or affect employment.
  3. Students with an F in Portfolio will not be eligible for participation in The Executive Network Program. It may also affect ability to join honor societies, receive CoB scholarships, or receive recommendations and referrals.
  4. Students who fail one or more Portfolio courses will be ineligible to graduate until they sign a graduation waiver with the dean’s office.
  5. Incoming transfer students will not be required to make up Portfolio courses that they missed prior to transferring to the CoB. However, they will be enrolled in a Portfolio course upon becoming a CoB major and must pass all Portfolio courses going forward.
  6. Students who study abroad for a semester or year will be waived from the Portfolio requirements for those semesters only.
  7. Portfolio exemptions for medical reasons will be handled on a case by case basis through the Dean’s office.

Transfer Credit Guidelines

Course credit may be granted for work successfully completed at other institutions of higher learning. Transfer coursework shall be valid for course credit toward degree requirements in the College only to the extent to which the courses taken represent courses applicable to the curriculum of the student's degree program. All questions regarding the application of transfer work to degree requirements upon admission must be resolved within the first semester of enrollment. Courses taken elsewhere prior to and after matriculation at Loyola transfer as earned hours; the grades do not enter into the student's Loyola GPA calculation.

The College will not accept transfer credit for any course in which a grade lower than C, or 2.0, was received. Course credit will not be granted for business courses completed at the freshman or sophomore level at another institution that are only offered at the junior or senior level at Loyola. Transfer students may receive course credit for business coursework completed at a community college or an institution not accredited by AACSB prior to admission, but should not expect to be able to receive further transfer credit for such work after matriculation except with the permission of the Associate Dean.

After matriculating at Loyola, students wishing to take courses at another institution must receive written permission from the Associate Dean prior to enrolling for the courses. Permission will be granted only to students in good academic standing and, for business courses, only for courses to be taken at institutions accredited by AACSB. Permission will not generally be granted to take courses at a community college after matriculation. Students are cautioned that permission to take courses at another institution during the summer session will be granted only for compelling reasons.

Independent Study Guidelines

A student may apply for an independent study only in the following two cases, and only if they have met with a desired full-time instructor who has agreed to facilitate the independent study:

  1. The student needs a course for graduation which is not presently being offered, or
  2. The student desires to study a topic(s) not covered in courses offered by the college.

A cumulative Loyola GPA of at least 2.0 is required in order to be eligible to apply for independent study (this GPA does not itself guarantee independent study will be granted). In general, students applying for independent study should also possess at least junior standing. Exceptions must be discussed with and approved by the Associate Dean. Students must complete a formal application prior to registration and must obtain approval from the desired instructor and the Associate Dean. Application forms and additional information are available from the Director of Student Services.
