MUJZ M107 Jazz Piano and Theory 2 crs.
This course is a study of the theory of jazz harmony, notation, and related functional piano skills. Ear training is also emphasized. This course is a prerequisite to MUTH M304 Jazz Composition and MUTH M309 Modern Arranging.
MUJZ M108 Improvisation I 2 crs.
This course is an introduction to jazz improvisation with focus on melodic development for improvisation and ear training. Also explored are general performance practices and basic theory. Blues repertoire is emphasized. Improvisation I is recommended as a prerequisite for MUTH M304 Jazz Composition and MUTH M309 Modern Arranging.
MUJZ M109 Improvisation II 2 crs.
This course is a continuation of Improvisation I. The focus is on chord/scale relationships as well as motivic development, ear training, and record transcriptions. II-V progressions are emphasized.
MUJZ M208 Improvisation III 2 crs.
This course is a continuation of Improvisation II with an emphasis on classic "standard tune" literature. Weekly assignments aim to develop vocabulary for common chord progressions.
MUJZ M209 Improvisation IV 2 crs.
This course is a continuation of Improvisation III. Successful completion of this course and the fourth semester jazz board barrier exam are required before students progress to Improvisation V.
MUJZ M308 Improvisation V 2 crs.
This course is designed to familiarize students with various styles and forms found in the standard jazz repertoire. Class meetings combine listening to important recordings with discussions focusing on the concepts and innovations of past and present masters of the idiom. Emphasis is placed on chromaticism, pentatonic scales and advanced modal techniques. Required work includes three transcriptions, performance of prescribed repertoire and “composed” solos.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of MUJZ M209 Improvisation IV and the fourth semester jazz board barrier exam.
MUJZ M309 Improvisation VI 2 crs.
This course is a continuation of Improvisation V with similar requirements, including transcriptions, repertoire and “composed” solos.
