This course provides entering students with an overview of the total music education program in a variety of school settings and to develop artistry in musicianship, pedagogy, and scholarship. Students will become familiar with department policies and procedures related to the major, will learn about opportunities within the department, and will develop skill sets and acquire information to help them navigate university life.
Requisite: This course is required of first semester freshman and transfer music education students.

This course offers the study of techniques leading toward basic performance competence and pedagogy of string instruments.
MUED M111 String Class II 1 cr.
This course offers the study of techniques leading toward basic performance competence and pedagogy of string instruments. Students examine intermediate and advanced pedagogy of string instruments.
MUED-M120 Seminar in Music Education 0 crs.
The Music Education Seminar meets once per month (i.e., August, September, October, November, January, February, March, April) throughout the academic year, scheduled at a Common hour on the academic course schedule. Seminar events include music education department meetings, special guest speakers, and Collegiate NAfME activities; other events may also involve school-wide convocations, student recitals, and studio master classes.
Requisites: Six semesters required. Offered fall and spring.
MUED M200 Field Experience in Music Education 0 crs.
This course requires school observations in a variety of school situations at assigned levels (K-12) including public and private schools in grades K-12. Students will be evaluated using assessment and learning activity strategies.

This course is the study of techniques leading toward basic performance competence and pedagogy of brass instruments. Students examine intermediate and advanced pedagogy of brass and percussion instruments.
MUED M212 Percussion Class I 1 cr.
This course is the study of techniques leading toward basic performance competence and pedagogy of percussion instruments. Music education students will be further instructed on the best practices for teaching percussion in the school music program.
MUED-M220 Introduction to Teaching Instrumental Music 2 crs.
This course is designed for choral music education and music majors, and will help to facilitate a basic understanding of the core principles of effective music teaching in an instrumental setting. The course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of effective instrumental music instruction and to provide opportunities to practice applying those principles in one’s own teaching. This course consists of structured learning experiences with woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments.
MUED M250 Practicum in Music Education 0 crs.
This course requires the student to focus on learning from a teacher selected from public and private schools in grades K-12. This course offers the student the opportunity for participation and music instruction at various assigned levels in music school classrooms grades K-12.

MUED M252 Music for the Special Learner 3 crs.
This course is designed to give students an overview of theory, research, and practice in educational settings with students who have disabilities. Didactic and experiential teaching methods will be used to demonstrate the use of music with this population. Normal musical development and its use in creating developmentally appropriate music experiences will be reviewed.
MUED-M301 Music Education Recital 0 crs.
Candidates for the Bachelor of Music Education are required to present a lecture/ demonstration recital during their junior year. The candidate must register for the course MUPR-M30X during the semester in which the recital is presented. The music education candidate will perform literature of various musical styles and present lecture reflective of methodology necessary in music teaching and learning of school level musical selections.
Prerequisites: Minimum 8 credits in private music instruction in major instrument or voice.
MUED M306 Instrumental Music Education Methods 3 crs.
This course covers the organization and management of elementary and secondary school instrumental music programs emphasizing proven teaching techniques, materials, and performance procedures.
MUED M307 Choral Music Education Methods 3 crs.
This course introduces the student to methods for teaching choral music. Emphasis is on management of performing ensembles, materials, teaching techniques, and literature.
MUED M308 General Music Education Methods I 3 crs.
This course covers organization and management of the elementary and middle school general music program emphasizing proven teaching techniques and materials based on a conceptual approach to music learning.
MUED M309 Psychology of Teaching and Learning Music 3 crs.
This course is an introduction to current theory and practice in music education including the psychology of learning and teaching music, child development and musical aptitude and ability as it applies in a music classroom. The development of a philosophy of music education will evolve from learning about effective lesson design, curriculum development, development of student learning targets (SLTs), state teacher evaluation (i.e., COMPASS), and the preparation for PRAXIS II standardized teaching exams.

MUED M312 General Music Education Methods II 3 crs.
This course is required for music education students who intend to teach general music at all levels of teaching music in a school classroom, K‐12. This is accomplished through lecture, workshop, and discussion, assigned reading materials, application and written and verbal evaluation. Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze Teaching Methods are presented in workshop form for application in the music classroom. Knowledge and skills required are based on learning objectives and activities provided by the instructor.

MUED-M320 Teaching Music 2 crs.
This course is designed to further students’ knowledge of the fundamental principles of effective music instruction and to provide opportunities for you to practice applying those principles in your own teaching. Prospective music instructors will continue to learn to effectively teach voice, wind, percussion, and string instruments in the school setting while gaining experience in peer teaching beginning music class. Essential skills in secondary instruments and the application of PK–12 pedagogy, are reinforced as students finish their preparations for the Introduction to Teaching Residency.
MUED-M321 Contemporary Teaching Methods 2 crs.
This course is designed to stretch student knowledge of methods outside the traditional general, band, choir, and string programs. Topics may vary from semester to semester as new possibilities of music methods materialize. Potential topics include concepts of jazz vocal and stage ensemble, marching band techniques, informal learning principles in music, music composition, music arranging, improvisation, principles of popular musics, the modern band, technology in the music classroom, digital music technology, sound engineering and recording, and sound amplification.
MUED M350 Marching Band Techniques 2 cr.
This course emphasizes show design, charting, marching and maneuvering, rehearsal planning, equipment selection, personnel management, auxiliary units, percussion, performance preparation and the fundamental principles of effective instruction related to the contemporary marching band program.
MUED M399 Introduction to Teaching Residency 3 crs.
The introduction to teaching residency is the beginning of the culminating experience in the music teacher-education program. It serves a critical role that allows the teacher candidate to practice and refine skills and competencies learned in courses and initial field experiences. This course includes study and application of theories and principles of effective planning, classroom behavior and management techniques, and instructional delivery in the classroom. The introduction to teaching residency allows the teacher candidate to practice and refine skills and competencies learned in courses and initial field/practicum experiences.

The teaching residency is the culminating experience in the teacher-education program. It serves a critical role that allows the teacher candidate to practice and refine skills and competencies learned in courses and initial field experiences. Teachers in residence will also participate in the Teaching Residency Seminar (i.e., MUED M452) to include study and application of theories and principles of effective planning, classroom behavior and management techniques, and instructional delivery in the classroom setting and support student experiences in the school music classroom.

MUED M452 Teaching Residency Seminar 3 crs.
This course will build on the cumulative knowledge and skill level of the candidate and will address accepted best practice by incorporating effective instructional strategies in the area of specialization. This course includes study and application of theories and principles of effective planning, classroom behavior and management techniques, and instructional delivery in the classroom setting. Concurrent field-based placement in a school setting under the supervision of a certified teacher is required.
Requisite: Enrollment in this course is concurrent with MUED M400.
MUED M499 Independent Study Credits Vary
With permission of an instructor and approval of the Music Education Chair, the student may pursue in-depth *study* of a subject area related to the student’s area of interest and/or music education concentration. The student, in consultation with the instructor, must outline the course plan of study in advance of university course registration. The written description should indicate the purpose and objective(s) of the independent study, preliminary list of relevant readings, and final product and/or outcome(s) of the course.
